After growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, marrying her high school sweetheart, and graduating from Washington University, Liza and her husband Cid moved to Charlottesville in 1976 to attend graduate school at UVA.

They put their Masters Degrees in English and Education to good use, with Cid teaching at the Darden School and serving as a Communications Consultant, and Liza teaching English and Leadership at Western Albemarle High School for 33 years.

After retiring from the classroom, Liza and Cid both worked for the Virginia Association of School Superintendents, and they also created and ran the Batesville Store, which provided great music and food for the local community for five years.

After building a house in the woods outside of Batesville in 1987, Liza and Cid started driving over Afton Mountain almost every evening to work out at the Waynesboro Family YMCA.

They both fell in love with the friendly people and the laid-back atmosphere of the Waynesboro Y, and after they began helping out with Y events, Cid was recruited by Gene Perry and Jeff Fife to serve on the Y’s Board of Directors.

After her husband’s sudden death in 2016, Liza started the Cid Fund, which has raised over $50,000 for our Y.

Liza was honored to be asked to join the Board, where she served as Secretary, Vice President, President, and Past President, and she was also pleased to be able to help Maggie Van Huss with the summer camp program for several years.

Since finally retiring two years ago from her work as an Educational Administrator, Liza has enjoyed becoming a frequent and active participant in – and on occasion a substitute teacher for – the Waynesboro Y’s Group Fitness Classes.
